Piezoelectric Fibers with Piezoelectric Copolymer

Thanks to their piezoelectric properties, P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers, Piezotech® FC, can be processed into a coaxial fiber where the piezoelectric layer is in between the center core and the outer conductive layer. These fibers are used for sensing and energy harvesting.

Piezoelectric fibers can be processed by different methods:

  • Extrusion directly on the core conductor

  • Coating from inks of the core conductor

  • Wrapping of stripes around the core.

Compared to PVDF homopolymer, P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers can be poled at lower electric flieds, do not need stretching, and show superior thermal stability. In addition, they are souble in a wide range of non-toxic organic solvent allowing coating of the core conductor from inks.

Piezoelectric fibers are of high interest for wearables, condition monitoring, underwater acoustics, etc.
